“Leap gives me the feeling of having control over the chaos that inevitably creeps into the home folder over the years, despite all efforts. And it’s incredible what stuff you can find that you didn’t even know exists.”

Leap allows you to organize and find your files – no matter where they are. Perfect for web designers, advertising, software development, or anyone who has many thousands of files on their hard drive. Easily one of the best Spotlight interfaces around. In addition to Spotlight, Leap has many other searching and tagging tools. Works well with tagging systems in QuickSilver and other programs.

A more natural way.

With Leap you find things based on your natural memory of that file. Hhmm it was a big photoshop file of a basketball court or Something I tagged important or A word document somewhere in my documents folder (feel free to substitute your own here). With the Finder though, it’s more like I think it might be called bball.psd and that I put it in the originals folder in images in the Project 29 folder which I think I put in Documents… nope, not there… where did I put it?”

Click to Developer’s Site for more info.

macZOT and Ironic Software will also give you another chance to buy Yep today as part of a package of Yep and Leap as a special offer (the price will be the same as if you bought both ZOTs separately)…Available from our home page throughout the weekend.

Great app, great discount. Use it for a while and it´s a pleasure for me.

  2. ozron Says:

I thought there was going to be a extra special price for Leap if we already had a licensed copy of Yep?

  3. blessingx Says:

Great price. Very curious if anyone has compared this to the free Punakea?

  4. Shishir Says:

Could the developers please tell us how to get the extra discount that was for users that already have yep?

  5. Shishir Says:

  6. Kurt Says:

I tried to enter my coupon code from my Yep! license and it does not show a discount at all. Instead is just says:

    Coupon: $ (deducted %)

Help! How do I get the extra discount from my Yep! license? I thought any license worked? Mine was from the MacUpdate Promo Bundle.

  7. 7IF7 Says:

    Hi,
@ Kurt… You have to do it from Leap, I think.
And you have the answer on the developer’s site.
    Good luck. 7IF7.

  8. 7IF7 Says:

Oh, and yes I think it’s an awesome app… I just got it a few hours ago and tried it in many ways…. works fine and as easy to use as Yep… Great.
For those who do not have a lisence yet, I should say this really looks like a great discount. Try it for a while… I’m sure you wont really be disapointed and you’ll begin to love this app…
    Have a good week-end. 7IF7

  9. Ayodh Says:

I tried entering the coupon from leap into the for, and it showed no discount. I too bought yep during the Mu Promo bundle. Has anybody had any success?

  10. Martin Says:

If you do it from within leap using the instructions on the developers site then you’re not going to get any MacZot benefit as I understand it.

I’m struggling with leap a little! I can see the use of yep and bought it on the Zot last week, however i’m not quite getting leap!

I’ve been trying to use it in place of finder and supposedly you’re meant to be able to find things quicker with it than in the finder or spotlight. So, say I want to start up XChat Aqua which sits in /Applications/XChat. Normally I click the applications icon in the dock, the grid pops up, i click the xchat folder, the folder opens and i double click the app.

So the idea is that i can get that done quicker with leap, yes?

So i open leap. I change from “PDF Documents” to “Applications”, then change from “All preferred places” to “Anywhere”, I then scroll to the bottom of the 229 items, or I guess i could start to type “xc” in the search bubble and finally I find xchat and open it. Seems like more work to me, not less?

I’m wanting to like this, but maybe i’m not understanding how it works properly. Can someone explain?

  11. Jim Says:

I’d like to know if Leap replaces Yep. Yep is just a solution for tagging and finding pdfs right, doesn’t Leap do that for all files?

  12. justG Says:

@Martin: Have you checked out the videos on their web site? There’s one that specifically addresses Finder vs. Leap wrt Applications:

    http://www.ironicsoftware.com/leap/video.html

  13. Ian Beck Says:

Leap is a pretty exciting piece of software. Some things to consider:

    - Leap allows you to tag any file, and it both imports and exports &tag style Spotlight comments which means that it integrates beautifully with Default Folder X, Quicksilver, etc.

    - Leap is a true file system tagger, which means that it doesn’t move your files out of their current folder hierarchy.

    - Leap uses folders and modification dates to supplement its core tagging capabilities, which means that you don’t lose the benefit of your previous folder hierarchy. This is huge (hard to describe just how huge). Most tagging solutions require to to basically start from scratch. You have to use Punakea and Tagbot for a while before you’ll have many files to search, or else spend a lot of time tagging files initially. With Leap, any file that is available to Spotlight is available to Leap when you first launch it, and you can begin to refine your searches with tags at any time.

A previous poster asked about differences between Leap and Punakea. Here’s a few:

    - Leap uses &tag format or @tag format (your choice), so your Spotlight comments are a lot less messy.
    - Because of the &tag format, Leap doesn’t allow spaces in tags (Punakea does).
    - Leap is a multi-purpose Spotlight interface as well as a tagging solution. You could conceivably get a lot of use out of Leap’s intuitive search and filtration system even if you rarely tagged a file.
    - Thanks to its import/export of Spotlight comments and the fact that it maintains its own database of tags (if I remember correctly), Leap is less likely than Punakea to lose your tags. It sort of serves as a backup system for Spotlight comment tags in many ways.
    - Leap supports a number of tagging metadata that will be useful if you use it (like XMP).

I strongly recommend taking a look at Leap if you want to get into tagging your files, and this sale is an excellent chance to do so (the price is usually the main detractor for Leap for me).

  14. john chandler Says:

If I recall correctly, if you purchased Yep prior to Leap’s release, your Yep license works for Leap as well. I’m not sure what the details are, but it seems that I remember them offering Leap as a thank you to Yep’s early adopters.

I’ve been using Leap for a few weeks and it’s great.

I just blogged yesterday about how I am using Leap and Hazel to simplify my Documents folder:
    http://www.creativityist.com/2008/03/28/spring-cleaning-the-documents-folder/

  15. Kurt Says:

As far as not receiving a discount after entering the coupon code for owning Yep! Let me be as clear as possible.

Here are the steps I am following:

    1. Launch Leap Demo
    2. Click “Buy Online…”
    3. Copy my coupon code that is presented to me.
    4. Enter the coupon code into the coupon code section of the Leap purchase form
    5. Click “Continue…”
    6. See a non-disounted price of $29.50 and the following text:

    a discount of: Coupon: $ (deducted %)

So why is this not working? Again, I am using a MacUpdate Promo Bundle license but the Yep! thread indicated any license should work.

    Help?!?!

  16. ubrgeek Says:

Alright, stupid question (I know I could find the answer if the wife wasn’t insisting I finally get around to cleaning up all of the stuff I said I would clean up a week ago ;)): If this is a Filnder replacement (which one of the comments implied) does it stack up against Pathfinder?

  17. Kurt Says:

@john chandler: I was pretty excited when you mentioned my Yep! license may work for Leap as well. But unfortunately it didn’t. :(

Hmmm… I have 40 hours to get this straightened out . Not the way I want to spend my weekend. Perhaps I forgo the extra deal as I’m not sure the money saved is worth my time. That and the fact I don’t need to have thoughts of “Why don’t these things just work like they say they will?” nagging at me when I’m trying to use the weekend for relaxation.

  18. Tim Says:

I looked into the discount issue and it looks like you save about $20 off the regular $59 price if you already own Yep (this includes purchasing Yep through the MacUpdate Promo Bundle). But, the macZOT price is still a better deal.

I’d actually never heard of Leap before today. It looked very promising from the start but I decided to take some time to put it through its paces before taking the “leap” and purchasing it (pardon the bad pun, quite intentional ;). It does succeed in making Spotlight much more convenient and overall much more useful. The tagging feature also appears to be well done.

I find the regular $59 price tag to be excessive. At $29.50 it’s a bit of a stretch ($10 less would be a no brainer), but I think I’ll go ahead and take advantage of this deal and am sure it will prove to be a valuable addition to my Mac toolbox.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

  19. Walker Argendeli Says:

I’ve wanted to buy this for awhile, but before I leap into this deal, (sorry, bad pun) I’d like to have comparison between this and path finder. Could someone do that, please.

  20. Techslacker Says:

Walker, my impression of Leap and Path Finder is that Path Finder is targeted at file management whereas Leap is closer to a document management solution.

Note I have neither one as of yet. I find both pretty pricey for no more than they do but this zot price for Leap helps with the value of Leap so I am considering it.

I’m not saying Path Finder is bad but it tries to be a jack of all trades and seems to benefit those more who have larger screen resolution than my little 12″ G4 Powerbook at 1024×768…the interface is very busy.

Leap seems to benefit as well from larger screen reale estate but still seems pretty useable with the smaller space I have.

  21. john chandler Says:

    Kurt,
Sorry to get your hopes up. My yep license works, but I bought it almost a year ago.

I think I would have had a hard time paying $59 for Leap, but at $29.50, I think it’s worth it from my experience with it.

  22. deb Says:

Below is what was posted about the Yep/Leap discount back when Yep was on MacZOT. How can the Yep owners get the additional discount?

    “Tom Andersen said,

    March 21, 2008 @ 10:30 am

    Hi,

I have talked to the macZOT team, and we will be having a Leap deal in a week or so (perhaps the last few days of March). Leap will be on at a usual macZOT deep discount, with an extra discount for Yep owners! This means that there is no reason not to buy Yep today.

    of Ironic Software
    http://www.ironicsoftware.com

  23. Kit Says:

    If you own YEP already………

I downloaded & ran Leap and hit the Buy Now button and get a really nice message that as a early owner of YEP I was getting a free licence to LEAP. Very nice in this day of greedy developers.
    Thank You!!!!

I also use PathFinder as a Finder replacement but this look like Leap will dovetail nicely with it.

  24. Ian Beck Says:

As far as PathFinder vs. Leap, a simple analogy is probably the most descriptive:

PathFinder is to Finder as Leap is to Spotlight.

Leap and PathFinder are two completely different products. Although Leap is billed as an “alternative Finder”, I don’t personally think that’s a very accurate description. If you’re dependent on the Finder/PathFinder for your file management, Leap can supplement but not replace them.

Think of Leap more like a new way of using Spotlight that permits file browsing using tags and other metadata. It’s possible to only browse your files through Leap, but it doesn’t offer congruent functionality to the Finder/PathFinder. It’s a completely different way to think about the files on your computer.

  25. Techslacker Says:

Kit, I think that was offered long ago to those who bought Yep before Leap’s initial announcement. Don’t recall for sure but I don’t believe that included the many users who bought the MacUpdate bundle.

I was one of those who bought the bundle and just for kicks installed the demo of Leap where it gave me a coupon code but it looks like you can’t find out what the code even takes off unless you go through the whole checkout procedure. I don’t care for giving others my personal info to do such a thing. Why not just say how much it is to begin with? The coupon code is for the bundle though so it probably doesn’t matter what the amount off is since I already own Yep.

All in all there doesn’t seem yet to be any discount for all previous Yep owners.

  26. Techslacker Says:

Alright forget some of what I said…somehow I misread things. There’s just the standard discount for previous Yep owners to take it to $49. If you already own Yep then it’s cheaper to get Leap with the zot price. So like i said there doesn’t seem to be any zot discount for previous Yep owners.

  27. Kurt Says:

@Techslacker: Ironic Software said there would be an extra discount for Yep! owners (See deb’s reply above).

This is further reinforced by the fact you can enter your Yep! coupon code in the checkout form on macZOT!

What needs to happen is to have either macZOT! or Ironic Software visit the comment section and clarify whether or not there is an additional discount as previously stated, so myself and others can make our decision to purchase and move on, or wait for things to be straightened out.

This has become a very confusing Zot! for some (perhaps only us MacUpdate Promo Bundle owners?)

    Help!

  28. Josh of Pixelton Says:

Interesting software but if you own Leopard (where spotlight actually works) it is slightly useless. Or if you have Quicksilver set-up.

This seems to be for only a slick way to tag, and less a Finder tool.

  29. Eddie Says:

I’m glad I have an extra day to make my decision, but chances are that I’ll pass on this one.

Watching the videos made me lose my initial excitement about Leap. I have my files fairly well organized, and when I need to find something I use Spotlight which I never liked until Leopard. Additionally I sometimes use File Buddy. Mostly I use -and highly recommend- Houdah Spot. Leap seems to add the ability to tag, which I seldom use (or need).

Reading about Leap I’ve found that it has been available for $34, $69, and currently $59. I’m having a hard time convincing myself that at $30 it is worth it for my needs. YMMV.

  30. ZOT Says:

    Friends,

We had planned to give Yep owners an extra discount on Leap…However, setting up the offer this week, Tom and I forgot we had made that specific PUBLIC announcement in the blog, decided it was a little too tricky to offer a special discount for yep owners, and chose to just offer a REALLY great deal on Leap for everybody.

    Again, sorry for the confusion.
    Thanks for your comments!

    Mike Biskup
    macZOT

  31. Bryan Says:

Wow – no offense, but now I’m really glad I didn’t go for Yep (after no one answered my question about its similarity to Leap). I did buy Leap, however; but I’d be pretty upset right now if I’d purchased Yep as well.

  32. Fillip Says:

This great! I checked out the Yep! coupon and if you already have Yep!, you’d have to pay $40…macZot is a better deal by far.

FYI on how to see what you’d pay using your Yep coupon here’s what I did.
    >Downloaded-installed-launched Leap
    > click on buy button (I saw my Yep! code in a pop-up box. I copied it to my clipboard app.
    > On the Ironic store I had to choose the ‘leap and Yep’ bundle (that’s what the Ironic FAQ said).
    > Used PayPal, copied the Yep! code into the ‘coupon box’, have to keep clicking until you get to the last PayPal window (the purchase page) to see that you’d have to pay $40.

Somewheres it’s written this is done automatically for you. It didn’t work for me, but doing the ‘ol copy-n-paste’ worked fine.

I went with this Promo because as Mike Biskup from macZot said, “Tom and I……decided it was a little tricky to offer a special discount for yep owners, and chose to just offer a REALLY great deal on Leap for EVERYBODY”–including yep owners.
Indeed they did. Thank you macZot :-)
    Fillip

  33. Kay Ezzell Says:

I know someone else asked this, but I don’t think it has been answered. Leap searches for PDF files, so why do you need both Leap and Yep? Is there something I’m missing?

  34. Daryl Forrest Says:

This is an astonishingly useful application. A $60 I wasn’t all that interesting in trying it out, but $30 seemed reasonable so I installed it and played with the trial version for a while. WOW! I have a ton of documents across multiple drives, and nothing makes searching through them as fast, easy, and intuitive as Leap…

After an hour or so of trying Leap out and testing it with massive and complex searches, I paid my $29.50 and am happy with the decision.

    Again… WOW!

  35. Giltinan Says:

    @Daryl Forrest

How were you able to get past the “buy” window so you could evaluate Leap? All of my menubar is grayed out while the buy window is open and I can’t find a way around it without actually buying it,

  36. Giltinan Says:

OOPs! Never mind I went back over the buy page and found the demo button I had overlooked many times. for some reason, I saw it more as an announcement box about the remaining time versus a button to permit demo use

  37. sjk Says:

    Key and others who’ve asked,

I also appreciate if someone would answer the “why both Yep and Leap?” question that’s come up several times.

  38. sjk Says:

That should be “Kay …” and “I’d also” — darn typos.

  39. Loyd Says:

Been using leap and yep since december – one of my favorite uses for leap is to sift though my thousands of vector/raster image files. with the quicklook support, and my eps plugin for quicklook this rocks for that..

for anyone doubting the goodness of Yep – if your scanner has twain support, it is awesome for scanning documents to PDF and the tagging offered there is great. I pitched a whole lot of junk paper that I didn’t want to get rid of but didn’t know how I’d organize if I scanned it. Yep did the trick for me and it’s turned out to be really for finding the various ebooks/pdf manuals I have also.

Both are apps I wouldn’t do without on a new system.

  41. Rees Maxwell Says:

Bought Yep last summer on MacZot. It is a great app, really slick. Original invoice said it includes a free update to v2.0 and it is currently at 1.78 … so that’s awesome.

Now I find out about Leap .. tried it, and I like it. Clicked on Buy Now from within the program, and I get a note that says ‘since you supported us from the beginning with Yep, your Yep license will work with Leap.’ In fact, Leap imported my Yep license.

This is completely unexpected, and over-the-top in customer support / satisfaction! THANKS GUYS!!

(And if it wasn’t for MacZot, I wouldn’t have known about Leap in the first place.)

  42. harringg Says:

    @Rees

I too have a Yep license already, and I get the offer to buy at a discount (not get for free), I get a code, enter it at the Kagi site, and it still says I have to pay $59.00.

Could ZOT or the developer please clarify the discrepancies in the pricing structure. Is Leap a free upgrade from Yep or not? Some say yes, others get a discount, some get no disount even with code generated from Leap.

  43. WHN Says:

as for the user who is asking about YEP and LEAP, iwould say if u can afford both, get both, as YEP does good job for scanning docs.

But Leap is all you need for organizing and sorting your files, since Leap does what Yep does in terms of PDF and documents.

At 29.95 leap is a great deal for what it does. I also like yep but now use it only for scanning docs mainly.

  44. pdadoc Says:

Was seriously considering LEAP, and still am, but after seeing comments, tried Path Finder. I’m really liking Path Finder (and a clean desktop!). Trying to figure out what I’m going to do, as buying both seems a bit excessive….

  45. Jim Says:

I have Path Finder but decided to take the plunge and pick up Leap. I can’t see using Leap when I need to navigate my folder hierarchy so for that I’ll still use Path Finder. But If nothing else, it’s a nice tagging solution and it does provide a better search interface. At worst I’ve contributed to a good developer.

  46. JFisher Says:

    @ harringg

Leap was free to those who bought Yep PRIOR to Leap’s release. So the people who are finding the Leap license in their Yep are just checking it for the first time, after having purchased Yep before Oct 07. For people who purchase Yep today (or anytime after Oct 07) Leap is discounted but not free. (AFAIU)

  47. sjk Says:

Thanks for some bits of Yep vs. Leap feedback.

  48. harringg Says:

    @JFisher

Thanks for clarfying. I did buy in December 07. But I’m still not getting a discount with my YepOwnerRefxxxxxxxx code when I click Buy Now. It’s coming up at full price.

Is that discount (when it’s working) any deeper than the MacZot?

I’ll keep following to hear back, but if I miss out, I miss out… :(

  49. Techslacker Says:

Barring a last minute change of mind which isn’t likely I’m going to pass on Leap. The interface just doesn’t work for me. I still like Yep and really hope that Yep can support more filetypes than just pdfs in a future version.

  50. Dick Lane Says:

I found useful info about tagging at
    tagamac.com

An interview with a developer of Leap is at

  51. Aaron Says:

Bought Yep last June and the email said the update to 2.0 would be free. I guess Leap *is* Yep 2.0. My Yep license works just fine in Leap.

  52. YellowMan Says:

For me too! Just copy and paste my yep licence to Leap and it works !
    It’s magic !
Without this blog I don’t be aware about this trick ! No mention of it nowhere in the Ironicsoftware site.
