The long awaited Disco – media burning app is now ready! The folks responsible for the application that took the Mac community by storm at the beginning of 2006 are finishing the year with a very strong release. This app came about in an interesting, almost serendipitous way. While waiting the couple of days prior to our trip to meet with Jasper Hauser in Europe, we wanted to see what we could accomplish in a short time. Austin had worked on some different apps that were the impetus for what we’re now calling – This began at the end of June!A HUGE amount of time, passion, and intensity have gone into this application. In fact, here’s the formula… Mix one developer who has no other worries, responsibilities, or distractions in his life. He’s got the success of an application like AppZapper under his belt and spends more time on his MacBook Pro than you or I are even awake each day. Add in a world-renown designer who is EXTREMELY passionate about his craft and will in fact almost enter into fisticuffs if you even question the almost insane attention to detail he puts into his work. Now, put those two in the same room everyday, feed them once in a while, and remind them to sleep every third day. What do you get? (ignoring the obvious temporary decline in ability for social interaction) You get a Mac OS X app who’s name can only be followed by… "I gotta have it!"
If you pick up your copy of Disco today; right now in fact, you could win one of three LaCie d2 DVD burners with LightScribe. This technology allows you to work with the latest media and even etch a label right into your disc as it burns – very COOL!* There is even an EXTRA bonus for EVERY purchase of Disco while it’s on the home page of MacZOT – http://maczot.com The deal is special because we’re launching something that we’ve personally taken a hand in and we want to reward all the people who have been and are willing to support the development of great Mac apps. Go watch the videos on the home page, read a bit more info about the application, but then come and get it here! Burn baby BURN!
*Disclaimer: There’s no purchase necessary to enter into the drawing for one of the 3 DVD-RW drives. You can enter by sending an email with the subject line: Burn Baby Burn. If you are chosen, we’ll follow up via email to request the necessary contact information. This contest is only valid until 11:59 pm PST October 30th, 2006 |

So, let’s dance! As promised, purchased upon released. Pity that numerous of us miss the other time. But hey! It is never too late :)
October 30th, 2006 at 5:51 am
Does “Spandex” mean disc spanning like Toast where it chops files up, or does it figure out where to separate a mass of files so that each burned disc is its own entity with readable, multiple files on it? If it’s the latter, I’m *definitely* in!! I’ve been waiting for that feature for a long, long time.
October 30th, 2006 at 5:57 am
I can’t believe my MacIntel won’t smoke! Great app, otherwise. Been using it for a couple weeks.
October 30th, 2006 at 6:18 am
I guess I’m confused. MacZot shows the price of $14.95 as discounted, but Macworld UK tells us the normal price of this software is $14.95:

Some things that need to happen before I will consider it. I think some of the issues below are the result of it being in beta and not a full release, or at least I hope that is the case.
1) Ditch the transparency, or at least make it optional. Transparency where you can see the windows below the is annoying.
2) I don’t need yet another style/theme of windows on my desktop. Respect the aqua settings in the preferences (blue or graphite) … and honestly, I don’t like the look of the application at all. I would suggest offering a couple of built in themes. If the goal is to make it stand out on the desktop, that is well done. Now lets see if you can make it blend in better with all the other Mac applications on the desktop.
3) Needs to handle ISO images better. I Tried to right-click then open a .iso with Disco and it just brought me to the drag and drop window. Should ask me if I want to burn the iso to disc. I shouldn’t have to drag it there after already right-clicking on the iso.
4) Need a way to allow iso files to be burned to a disc as data and not as a disc image. Perhaps with a ‘cancel’ and then have an option to enter the file viewer mode.
5) Need to be able to drag multiple files to the window at a time. I can drag 10 files individually and it appears to work fine. But if i drag those same ten files as a bundle it takes 2 minutes for it to display the files. This is probably just a bug in the beta though.
6) If I then drag an iso to the disc it asks me if I want to burn that image. If i say ‘cancel’ and ‘leave’ it starts fresh. If I say ‘cancel’ and ‘continue’ it stays in the burning image mode.
I was hoping for something better than the Finder for dealing with ISO images, since my copy of Toast is aging and I need a universal binary replacement. I don’t think disco is that app though, unless they can hit the above issues in the next week or so.
October 30th, 2006 at 6:30 am
Do the people who pre-ordered Disco get entered into the prize draw automatically? I’m going to send an email just in case (I hope that doesn’t invalidate my chances).
Also, I suppose I would have to order another copy to be eligible for the “EXTRA bonus for EVERY purchase of Disco while it’s on the home page of MacZOT”?
October 30th, 2006 at 6:46 am
i don’t know if i see the point of this unless it can copy my protected Dvds, its a cute App, but theres a burner built into the MAC OS for files. Sure its far less prettier, but i’d rather see something like App Zapper, something thats missing from the MAC OS, before i see something thats just nicer looking.
October 30th, 2006 at 7:08 am
Dave: I don’t think it breaks up files. If you’ve got files bigger than a single CD/DVD, it won’t burn them, as far as I know.
October 30th, 2006 at 7:40 am
Definitely getting this one. Thanks macZOT!
October 30th, 2006 at 7:50 am
How does this app compare to say, Toast? I downloaded the beta, but I really don’t have anything to test it out with :P. I’m about to jump on it just for all of the raving that people are doing about it. It does seem quick and responsive, which I defintely like (when it came to imaging a disc I inserted).
October 30th, 2006 at 7:57 am
So I waited about 5 minutes for a response…. and I bought it anyway :D
October 30th, 2006 at 8:02 am
Wish I could edit these comments. Are we automatically entered in the free burner drawing?
October 30th, 2006 at 8:18 am
I think the extra bonus is probably a free copy of AppZapper. (I’m not being facetious. I really think that’s likely.)
October 30th, 2006 at 8:23 am
I’d be more tempted to Zot if my comments didn’t keep getting deleted from this blog. As it is, I’ll be doing my best to share my experiences with as many people as possible – I’m really quite disappointed in this part of the Mac community.
October 30th, 2006 at 9:24 am
It *does* span multiple CDs. I dragged 10.8 GB of files onto it, inserted a blank single-layer DVD, and it said “3 discs required.” Insert disc, burn, repeat two more times, and I have 10.8 GB of files intelligently split across my three discs. The disc spanning feature alone is worth the purchase price to me.
October 30th, 2006 at 9:44 am
Thanks, Dan Ridley. Glad the word got out. I guess I was too verbose or something, Zot deleted my comment expressing the same.
October 30th, 2006 at 9:48 am
Even with a broken CD/DVD drive right now I will buy this. Awesome app. Awesome Zot.
Now to find a working drive just to use this!
October 30th, 2006 at 10:09 am
This really is a great app… I’m glad I zotted it when it was a mystery… 5 bucks! A total steal. The particle effects are nice, but the app’s functionality is its true value.
October 30th, 2006 at 10:41 am
At the Disco website it says it cost $14.95 – Why is the Maczot price $14.95 the same after the Maczot reduction ?
October 30th, 2006 at 10:45 am
Can it do auto-compression and burning of VIDEO_TS folders to 4.7 a la Toast? That’s a huge feature.
October 30th, 2006 at 10:56 am
@Mr.Harddrive: good question. it appears macZOT is not offering a further discount from the website, but including a “surprise” bonus as well as entry into the drawing. the ones who got the true major discount were those who purchased it early on as a mystery app.
i didn’t bit on the mystery back then, but picked it up today….i could certainly use it in my arsenal of burning apps. ZOTted!
October 30th, 2006 at 11:51 am
Actually Zot is offering a discount too, it’s just the same discount (plus extras) as disco is offering right now. The price of this app is $24.95, the $14.95 price is discounted by $10.
I bought it today. Zot and disco have done a great job with the hype up of the app, way to market!
October 30th, 2006 at 12:28 pm
How about those of us who already pre-ordered it? Do we get the bonus & a chance at the prize?
October 30th, 2006 at 12:39 pm
I’m in. Can’t wait to see the myztery Extra and I hope I win one of the DVD drives…
October 30th, 2006 at 12:40 pm
I asked this Q already … but my post seems to have been deleted/lost
Well? Can you hear me anyone? Do I need to buy another copy to get the freebie? Or will I get it as my birthday zot (for last saturday)?
October 30th, 2006 at 1:33 pm
So do ZG peeps get the mystery extra as well or not? Very curious!
October 30th, 2006 at 1:48 pm
just curious, who’s birthday today?
October 30th, 2006 at 2:02 pm
nice touch. 2 for the price of 1. thax, maczot and the dev. of disco p.s. the earlier ppl still gotten a sweeter deal in terms of $ alone hehe
October 30th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
So – anyone wanna split the 2-for-1 deal with me? First taker @ xnedwriter at mac dot com can get my extra one at half off. I don’t do a lot of disc burning & (sadly) don’t have friends with Macs (yes, I probably do need new friends), so otherwise I’ll pass on this one.
October 30th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
I can’t get Toast to leave my DVD-R alone so the Disco can write to it… Any ideas?
October 30th, 2006 at 3:33 pm
Nice offer, but I really do not need two licences. How about selling the other for something around half price? So, the first who sends an Email to greenie@arcor.de can have the other licence. Paypal would be best, probably.
October 30th, 2006 at 4:01 pm
@Mike “How about those of us who already pre-ordered it? Do we get the bonus & a chance at the prize?”
Man oh man, are you serious? This just really gets me and I see it a lot here. You got a great deal on the pre-order of $5 and you’re asking for more!!! The contest is open to all, read the daily ZOT before posting, the bonus is a bonus, today. Not 6 months ago. lol, man.
October 30th, 2006 at 4:37 pm
Ok, time to sleep (for me), guess I already have someone who takes the second licence, so it’s not necessary to send any more emails.
October 30th, 2006 at 5:14 pm
Where is this 2-for-1 deal?
October 30th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
I guess I won’t be looking to buy this. I left a comment and question on here earlier and it seems it was never posted for someone to comment on. Either this site is still flakey with replies or posts are moderated. This is the second zot that I’ve had this happen. If the site promoter wants sales, then fix the damn site or alter how the moderating is.
The question? I just wanted simple clarification as to whether this was truly still a beta or considered a final being released.
It doesn’t really matter now though.
October 30th, 2006 at 5:50 pm
Can’t really afford buying this, but if anyone truly kind has an extra license they want to send to cameron (dot) williams (at) gmail (dot) com, I’d really appreciate it.
October 30th, 2006 at 7:24 pm
So, the “extra” is an additional license of Disco? It doesn’t matter since I just purchased it but would be nice to know :)
October 30th, 2006 at 8:14 pm
Good thing I have OS X, Toast, BackUp, etc. Disco refused to burn for me. Just kept ejecting the DVD-R’s I was using and told me I made a coaster. Real funny. Damn glad I didn’t pay for a beta.
October 31st, 2006 at 4:30 am
Just got Disco some days ago and I really like it! Wrote a review last night; its at http://espen.ottersen.name/blog/article/77/review-discoapp
Please give it a digg http://digg.com/apple/Review_of_Disco_with_screen_shots if you like it; to spread the word.:)
October 31st, 2006 at 5:40 am
I’ve registered. Though I’m not sure how much I will use Disco for burning discs since I don’t burn that many discs otherwise, I love the GUI.

Where is this 2-for-1 deal?
It appears to be for ZOTgeist members only. Sorry. :o(
October 31st, 2006 at 6:55 am
About my above comment, I only say this because the email came addressed to ZOTgeist from MacZOT….I could be wrong, though. (wish there was an edit button).
October 31st, 2006 at 7:30 am
I really, (need more emphasis) REALLY wish ZotGeist people could keep their mouths shut every now and then. We get inside info because we were willing to take a shot on a mystery that a lot of people did not want to take part in. Unfortunately, that “inside info” becomes public knowledge as soon as some ZG member decides to post it here as a comment. It’s even better in this case because apparently some of you didn’t do a very good job of reading the email. Oh well, I guess it is probably the way of the internet. I don’t think there is any way to keep a secret around here. Happy Zotting!
October 31st, 2006 at 7:41 am
Look in your order history – there are instructions to registering for both yourself and the gift version.
ZOT! – there is a glitch in the registration, it sent my registration with my info and email address to the gifted persons email address and sent his info to my email address. I’m 100% I didn’t enter the info wrong.
Time to burn! :)
October 31st, 2006 at 7:49 am
had the same problem with registration…i never received the confirmation email to my own address. luckily i took the advice of the instructions page and sent MYSELF an email with the registration info. glad i did!
October 31st, 2006 at 7:59 am
I have this error :
to=, relay=none, delay=0, status=bounced (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=host.onezot.com type=A: Host not found)
when i sent my registration info
October 31st, 2006 at 8:24 am
OK that was quick. The deal is done and my 2nd license is all taken care of!!!
October 31st, 2006 at 8:53 am
Zot, why do you keep killing my comments about the strange pricing?!
I think you may have now officially lost a Zotter.
Hope it was worth it to you.
October 31st, 2006 at 9:00 am
n0mmo: that’s pretty unfair. Play nice, zot.
October 31st, 2006 at 10:34 am
I think most of the comment deletions are due to bugs in the software. I’ve had comments that I’ve submitted, but they never came up in the first place. In contrast, this one appeared immediately after hitting submit.
Rather than say ZOT is deleting your comments, check if they’re actually posted after you submit them ;) Sometimes, if someone posts after you tried, it’ll work when you try again.
October 31st, 2006 at 10:41 am
Wow, I left a comment asking people to stop releasing ZotGeist info and it got deleted too. This comment deletion thing is getting really, really old.
October 31st, 2006 at 10:42 am
No smoke on my G5…
I’ve got this running on my dual 2.3 G5 with my GeForce 7800GT and 5 GB RAM and I’m not getting any smoke effects. Not that it’s that important, but I want to be able to show off. Discs seem to be burning just fine, though.
October 31st, 2006 at 10:58 am
In that case, fix it, zot.
October 31st, 2006 at 11:38 am
Groxx,
I have seem my posts disappear after they appeared.
October 31st, 2006 at 12:13 pm
ok enough about Disco, can we have a new deal? :)
October 31st, 2006 at 12:41 pm
@cameron
still need the license? don’t need two myself
October 31st, 2006 at 12:50 pm
I just wanted to thank the person who sent me the Disco reg code. I really appreciate it.
October 31st, 2006 at 12:57 pm
cheers!
October 31st, 2006 at 1:21 pm
US Marine here low on a budget..If you have an extra registration…I hate to beg, but we’ll call it a military discount?!?! :-) have a good one…
PASwigart at gmail dot com
October 31st, 2006 at 1:35 pm
I don’t need my second license, if anyone would like it for half price, email me at sdt33 at yahoo
October 31st, 2006 at 1:59 pm
when will the serials be posted? didn’t receive mine yet…
October 31st, 2006 at 2:40 pm
mbond, hopefully those issues -and more- will be fixed. Even with all the hype, Disco is not getting many positive reviews. Perhaps the next version will be better.
October 31st, 2006 at 2:47 pm
When will we find out about the DVD Burner give away? My luck is bad, so I am pretty sure I won’t win one, but you never know….
October 31st, 2006 at 2:50 pm
Zot, is there any particular deadline for when we have to use the gift registration??
October 31st, 2006 at 4:52 pm
wow, registered disco and it says free upgrades… until vers 2? gee, thanks. 14.95 is starting to feel rather expensive for one version only. sure it is cheaper than toast to begin with, but after multiple upgrades? pfff…
October 31st, 2006 at 4:57 pm
yeah, and i got the email for the second reg, not MY reg, as was mentioned above. great work!
i am a new zot member, and am so far unimpressed.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:22 am
Cameron, you’re welcome. p.s. I’m not the one who sent you the Disco reg code.
November 1st, 2006 at 8:49 am
although i did buy Disco this round, i have to agree with a number of mbond’s points, except #3…i don’t have a problem with a cool interface. however it’s beta, and even when it gets out of beta status it’ll still be a 1.0 app. let’s try to remember that 1.0 apps–in particular, shareware ones usually developed by one to three people–don’t usually do your dishes AND walk your dogs. i bought Disco in part for its future, and to support good shareware.
November 1st, 2006 at 12:07 pm
my comments were deleted as well. this after having seen them posted for a few hours. cheers. i guess only positive comments are allowed here.
