Hordes of Orcs
Defend your village from “The Glowing Portal of Really Bad Things”

Normally: $24.95

ZOT Price: $12.49

Click to MacZOT Try Now

Hordes of Orcs is a “Tower Defense” game in which you must build walls and lethal towers to defend your village from the Orcs emerging from, what the village elders call, “The Glowing Portal of Really Bad Things That We Should Have Bricked-Up a Long Time Ago.” Sadly, the Portal is un-bricked and the Orcs are very, very hungry. If 20 Orcs make it to your village, you’re toast.

To kill the Orcs, buy some Towers. Arrow Towers are cheap and weak, Radiation towers are expensive and deadly. Each Tower has its own unique abilities, and each tower can be upgraded to do more damage or to have more range. Click on a tower to see its stats and upgrade cost. Should you build lots of Arrow Towers? Or a few Fire Towers? Well, that’s where the strategy comes in!

Each time you kill an Orc you’ll get some cash… (like pinatas, Orcs are full of candy and money as everybody knows).

Remember, certain Orcs are resistant to certain Towers, (Fire can’t hurt the Orcs in Red for example), so a combination of Towers is your best bet. Clicking on a marching Orc will show you that Orc’s health and special properties.

Don’t forget your Spells! You have four spells from which to choose:

Teleport: Sends the selected Orcs back to the starting Portal.
Fog: Slows all the Orcs down for a short while, giving your Towers more time to knock the candy out of them.
Bait: Creates an irresistible Orcish gift-basket of shitake mushrooms, moose dung, and the blood of innocents. They’ll forget your village and head right for it.

Weaken: Makes the selected Orcs more vulnerable to all of your Towers.

You can only cast a Spell if you have enough Mana. So keep an eye on your Mana stat, and save it for emergencies!

Hordes of Orcs has six different game variations, so once you’ve mastered Open Warfare, you can try to stop the Orcs from making off with your treasure in Capture the Flag or stick to the path in Maze Defense.

Click the “Zoom” button if you’ve built all your Towers and you’re just watching the carnage.

Balance Engine

Hordes of Orcs is proud to use the +7systems Balance Engine to collect game-play information. The more info the Balance Engine collects, the better future versions of Hordes of Orcs can be tweaked, resulting in an awesome game only getting better. Only game-play information is transmitted back while you play Hordes of Orcs. At no time do we access any personal information (unless you count doing 683 damage to an Orc personal). You can opt out of this at any time. Click on Options in the main menu, select Other, and un-check the “*Participate in +7 Balance Engine?*“ option.

An interview with Lydia Heitman | Freeverse

What’s the most unique, useful feature of your product?

In Hordes of Orcs, rich graphics combined with deep, well-polished Tower Defense gameplay.

Why did you create this app? or What need were you trying to satisfy?

To make a tower defense game that went above and beyond less involving Flash games to provide a more compelling and engrossing game experience.

What is most interesting to you about developing SW for the Mac platform?

Game-wise, it’s always been an rather under-served niche in the game development world.

What features should a prospective buyer look into during a trial of
your product?

They should look out for game balance, graphics, and its overall fun-factor.

What’s your favorite Mac app out there from another developer? Why?

Our answers are all over the board, but our developer says probably Galcon for it “manages to be incredibly simple, yet very rich with lots of replay value.”

What features would you like to add to your product that at this
time seem improbable/impossible?

Real-life Orcs! The portal becomes your computer screen!

What would you like a user to ask you?

Anything from “suggestions” to “who are the Orcs modeled after”!

ZeusDraw 1.3.3
Oustanding Vector Drawing Program!

Normally: $90.00

ZOT Price: $54.00

Click to MacZOT Try Now

ZeusDraw is a vector drawing program with a fluid, graceful interface, great brushes and a host of other features outlined in detail below.

ZeusDraw’s important controls are easily accessible without hunting. There are two dockable tool palettes, one for viewing and one for creation/editing. An additional palette holds the controls for the current tool. The primary controls are immediately available, and less frequently used ones are easily accessible in fold-up sections of the controls palette. ZeusDraw has a large set of keyboard shortcuts, but it can also work conveniently using only a pressure sensitive pen and tablet.

  • System Requirements – ZeusDraw 1.3.3 requires a minimum of OS X 10.4 and is localized for English, French, Spanish and German.
  • Full Layer System – ZeusDraw has a complete layer system. You can add layers, delete them, rearrange them, make them visible or invisible and lock or unlock them. You can also assign an opacity and a blend mode to a layer.
  • Convert PDF and PostScript to editable objects – ZeusDraw can convert most imported PDF, PS and EPS files into ZeusDraw objects. These objects can then be edited and modified like objects that are directly created in ZeusDraw.
  • CMYK Color – You can choose between the CMYK color model or the RGB color model for your documents.
  • Color Management – You can set the profile (color space) for new documents and control how imported images are matched to the document color space. You can also match an entire document to a new color space (convert RGB to CMYK for example) or assign a different profile to a document.
  • Choose Color Space for Exported Bitmaps – You can choose the color model when exporting bitmaps. (RGB, CMYK or Grayscale for tiff or jpeg, RGB or grayscale for png.) The exported bitmap’s color model does not have to be the same as the document color model.
  • Object Opacities – You can assign an opacity (degree of transparency) to individual objects and to groups.
  • Watch movie

Download a 30 day trial copy.

Based on the Modern Mac Graphics System

Quartz and Cocoa let ZeusDraw show you what you are doing as you do it. When you move or rotate an object you see the object move or rotate, not its bounding box. When you draw with a brush you see a close approximation to the final brush stroke as you draw, not a dotted line that is filled in later.

    Watch movie

    Better Brushes

ZeusDraw has a selection of vector brushes (Smooth Brush, Shaded Brush, Multi-Hair Brush), and it also has an object brush that allows you to paint with any piece of artwork – vector or bitmap.

    Watch movie

When the object brush is used with a textured bitmap, you can obtain results similar to those in a pixel based paint program. But the brush strokes remain objects – they can be selected, moved, scaled, rotated, or deleted. The brush’s path may be modified, and its attributes (type, width, color, and randomness) can be edited with a live (as you do it) display of the results. A brush sample window provides a space to try out brushes and see the effects of different settings. ZeusDraw comes with a library of brushes, the means to create and add your own brushes to the library, and a way to save a set of brushes with your design file.

    Watch movie

    Better Path Tools

ZeusDraw simplifies Bezier curves. With ZeusDraw’s path tools you enter control points in order along the path (more logical and intuitive, since the shape of the polygon made by the control points is a rough indicator of the shape of the curve). While adding points to a curve you can go back at any time and move any of the points that you have already entered, making it easy to obtain the shape you want.

    Watch movie

When editing an existing path, all the points are available for editing – there is no confusing secondary selection tool.

    Watch movie

    Better Gradient Tool

ZeusDraw lets you edit gradients in place, on the the objects they are filling. The live editing lets you change the position, orientation and type of the gradient as well as the number, color and spacing of the gradient colors and see the results as you work. You can also drag and drop colors directly to the gradient.

    Watch movie

    Better Color Picker

ZeusDraw comes with a version of the Shades Color Picker built in.

    Watch movie

The Color Chips palette shows all the colors currently used in the design. Changing the color of a chip changes all objects in the design that are that color. The Swatches palette lets you keep colors and gradients with your file, even if they are not currently being used.

    Watch movie

    Better Text

Using ZeusDraw you enter text directly where you want it, without any “text-box”. The text can then be transformed (moved, scaled, rotated, skewed) and the transformed text can be edited in place with the text tool. The text can be turned into paths for further graphic modification.

    Watch movie

    Bitmaps and Stencil Bitmaps

In addition to working with normal full-color bitmaps (jpeg, tif, png, gif and bmp), ZeusDraw can use grayscale bitmaps as stencils. The resulting artwork can be re-colored in the same way as normal vector objects – either using the object inspector or by dropping a color chip on them. You can use images from clip art disks, like these frogs, or use bits of scanned texture to make interesting brushes. If you open a full color bitmap as a stencil, ZeusDraw will convert it to a stencil for you.

    Watch movie

    Power Copying

ZeusDraw’s Duplicate Tool is used to place or stamp copies of your graphics. It can also be used to drag and drop copies of graphics that you select into other programs such as Mail, Pages and Keynote.

    Watch movie

ZeusDraw also has Multi-Copy Tools that let you place equally spaced multiple copies of an object along a line, an arc, a full circle or a path as you draw.

    Watch movie

    Great Layout and Construction Aids

ZeusDraw has Snap to Grid, but it also has Snap to Point, Snap to Path for precision drawing, and Snap to Angle for drawing arcs and rotating objects.

    Watch movie

Automatic alignment guides let you line up your art-work by just dragging objects with your mouse. When you are close to lining up with another object, a line appears, and when you release the dragged object, it snaps into place.

    Watch movie

Draw by gesture or by the numbers. The Transformation Palette lets you move, rotate, scale or offset by by an amount you chose. With the Geometry Inspector you can directly set the size and position of an object. Measure distance and angle with the Measuring Tools.

    Watch movie

    Better Viewing Tools

ZeusDraw has a complete set of easily accessible viewing tools including a separate undo for views. You can zoom up to take a look at a detail and then easily return to your original view.

ZeusDraw also has a tablet and trackball mode that allows two handed operation when using a pressure sensitive tablet – the pen and tablet function as the pointer in the normal way while the trackball scrolls and the trackball buttons zoom in and out.

    More features

    Blend Modes

ZeusDraw supports the standard Adobe blend modes.

    Soft Edges

Even with anti-aliased drawing, thin lines sometimes show artifacts on the screen. ZeusDraw’s new SoftEdges eliminate most of the artifacts making it more pleasant to draw on the screen and prepare artwork meant to be viewed on-screen.

    Actual Size Viewing

With ZeusDraw 100% means 100%. If you draw a one inch long line it will be very close to one actual inch long on the screen, rather than about 3/4 inch as with many other programs. This helps in visualizing how your design will look when it is printed.

    No Size Limits

Designing a banner or billboard? ZeusDraw will work for you. There are no limits on the size of your design.

    Email from Within the Program

You can e-mail either an area of your design or selected objects from within ZeusDraw. Works with Apple Mail, Eudora, MS Entourage or the AOL mail client.

    Arrows and Dashes

Use the ones that come with ZeusDraw or create your own.

    Tiled Output

ZeusDraw gives you tiled printing and tiled pdf/PostScript output of any size area of a design with a tile size that you choose.

    Bitmap and pdf/PostScript Export

ZeusDraw can create jpeg, png, tiff, gif and bmp bitmaps at any resolution and pdf/PostScript files of any area of your design. You can choose to export the selection, the page bounds, your entire drawing or a specified area.

    Eyedropper Tool

Copy selected attributes from on object to another.

    Complete Help Book

ZeusDraw has a standard Macintosh Help Book. You don’t have to be online to read it.

For the first time ever, CartoonSmart has put together a package of ALL our Flash gaming tutorials for one low price. You’ll get lengthy multi-hour tutorials for…

    Basic Gaming (4 Hours)
    Classic Gaming (6 Hours)
    Role Playing Gaming (7 Hours)
    Games of Chance (5 Hours)
    Battleship-Style Games (10 Hours)
    Tank Gaming (4 Hours)
    Darts (3 Hours)
Tetris / Column Drop Style Games (4 hours)
    Missile War Gaming (3 hours)

CartoonSmart tutorials are meant for professionals looking to learn Flash, but these courses are equally good for middle or high schoolers that need to occupy themselves now that summer is upon us!

ZOT Interview with Justin Dike – Creator of CartoonSmart.

1 What’s the most unique, useful feature of your product?

Like 99% of CartoonSmart tutorials, these gaming lessons are project-based vs. book-learning which is usually just a few lines of code with an explanation that obviously teaches the code’s function which doesn’t always teach its relevance, or usefullness in a grander scheme. So with a lesson framed around a much bigger project, you get to really see the why’s and how’s of coding. Plus, with this package you get to make a ton of games, which is probably the most fun way to learn Actionscript.

2 Why did you create this app? or What need were you trying to satisfy?

There’s about 12 specific games you can create with this package, and most of them were requests that customers made, like “dude, can you make a side-scroller game in Flash”.

4 What features should a prospective buyer look into during a trial of
    your product?

We do have the first hour of our gaming course available to download… … and I’d hope prospective buyers would notice that the video is high quality, captured at actual size ( and just a hair under what’s considered HD these days). Source files are always included with the lesson, which some tutorial sites make you pay extra for. And I hope that new buyers will like the instructor since in most cases for these Flash tutorial that instructor is yours truly.

5 What are some interesting experiences you’ve had creating new
versions of your software when OS is upgraded?

Well since Flash is pretty universal between the Mac and PC, OS updates don’t really affect us, but thats an interesting point because its something I really don’t have to worry much about. Even when Adobe decides to update their Flash Player, it doesn’t affect past published versions of Flash files. It would be like if the new Quicktime stopped playing older .mov files. That would be a nightmare for anyone with a site full of old files. So thats part of the beauty of developing with Flash. And with Adobe AIR becoming more mainstream, you can create actual Apps now with Flash vs. that cheesy Mac Projector format.

6 What’s your favorite Mac app out there from another developer? Why?

Snapz is probably my favorite because I use it so much and its the foundation of my business. Back in the early days of CartoonSmart if I didn’t discover that app, there probably wouldn’t be a CartoonSmart. Yeah there’s other really good capture software but for the price and function, you can’t beat Snapz.

7 What features would you like to add to your product that at this
    time seem improbable/impossible?

Well I think myself, and most other video instructors have this “biz” pretty well figured out. We sit in front of a mic and talk for minutes and hours, and record what we do. I think something really drastic would have to change with learning in general to make our jobs any different… Alright, well this will sound like a joke, but remember in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude he had those data crystals or whatever that enabled him to learn from his dead dad. Someday I think e-learning will get to that level, where you can really ask the instructor questions. Obviously with a limited number of responses but I think we’ll see it.

8 What would you like a user to ask you?

Anything. My door is always open. There’s a form on the site to email me. That goes to no one else. Plus there’s always the forum, blog, or twitter, and all that feedback goes straight to me. I hire out some other instructors but this is essentially a one-person company when it comes to stuff like that. I do keep a daily blog of anything that interests me in this great big internet, so if I can plug that, its just , and the twitter is…

9 What should I ask that I’m forgetting?

Who would win in a theoretical mega fight? Lets try Conan vs. all the buff guys from 300. And I’ll go with Conan on this one. He just needs to find an even narrower passage than they did, squeeze himself in and fight one guy at a time. Easy.

10 What are the answers to some common questions people have about
    your app before they buy?

“Do I have to watch online or can I download?” is the most common. And you can download. Our movies are in Quicktime format and if you’re on the Mac thats probably the best format possible. You can view in Quicktime or iTunes which means you can take your training to your iPods or iPhones as well. I can’t imagine watching a coding tutorial on a tiny iPod is that great, but I know plenty of students that do just that.

Justin points to the spot on his hand were he was struck by lightning when he was 7 yrs old.

    Training videos on macZOT???

Yes! We’ve teamed up with Justin at CartoonSmart (A fellow Mac-Guy) to bring you a great package of videos at a great price! You will notice when you click BUY that you are buying directly from the developer during this offer.

    Find Photos Faster.

Keyword Manager introduces a brand new way of assigning keywords to your photos in a simple and efficient way. Keyword Manager expands the functionality of your familiar iPhoto setup, and will greatly enhance your photo management experience.

  • Hierarchical keyword grouping
For example, you can have the keyword Paris as a subkeyword to France. Every time you assign Paris to a photo, France will also be assigned to that photo.
  • Much faster than any AppleScript based solution
AppleScript based solutions become excruciatingly slow when assigning and removing keywords from a large amount of photos. Keyword Manager taps directly into iPhoto’s own keywording system, for optimal performance.
  • Intelligent solutions for fast keywording
Smart auto-completion helps you increase the rate at which you keyword your photos. Non-obtrusive auto-correction suggestions helps you avoid creating similar duplicate keywords.
  • Assign keywords while in full-screen mode
With Keyword Manager you can still assign keywords to your photos, even when viewing them in full-screen mode.
  • System Requirements

iPhoto 06 (iLife ’06) or later
Mac OS X 10.5 or later

Click to Developer’s Site for more info.

A ZOT interview with Johan Lindström

1 What’s the most unique, useful feature of Keyword Manager?

Keyword Manager adds new features to iPhoto such as the hierarchical keyword system, without sacrificing compatibility with iPhoto’s own keyword system. Even if you choose to stop using Keyword Manager, all keywords still remain in iPhoto. This also means that other plug-ins that use the keywords will function well when Keyword Manager is installed.

2 Why did you create this plug-in?

Keyword tagging in iPhoto 6, which was the most recent version when we created Keyword Manager, was quite poor. iPhoto was a good application in many ways, but the lack of a decent way to tag the photos in your photo library made it less useful than it could be. Since we both had large collections of photos we decided that extending iPhoto would be worth putting effort into.

3 What is most interesting to you about developing SW for the Mac platform.

The balance between ease of use and power. When it comes to developer tools and the programming environment other systems often sacrifice one or the other. Programming in Objective-C and using the many powerful APIs allows us to quickly create great products. Most of our time goes into making image analysis software, and Mac OS X is uniquely suited for this purpose.

4 What features should a prospective buyer look into during a trial of your product?

When using Keyword Manager in iPhoto for the first time we’d recommend bringing up the quick assigner, select a photo album, and just try tagging the photos in that album. Using either the keywords that were already in iPhoto, or creating new ones on the fly, it should be easy to see how much faster it is to use Keyword Manager, rather than iPhoto’s own keyword tools. After becoming familiar with the basic operation of Keyword Manager the user should try arranging the keywords into a hierarchy, which will make it even faster to tag photos.

5 What are some interesting experiences you’ve had creating new versions of your software when OS is upgraded?

It is always a challenge to keep Keyword Manager compatible with new versions of the OS and, even more, new versions of iPhoto. Since iPhoto does not have an officially supported plug-in architecture we need to find new ways of loading into iPhoto, as well as keeping up with the internal changes in iPhoto. Each new version iPhoto has required a complete rewrite of the glue between Keyword Manager and iPhoto. It can sometimes seem like a new version of Keyword Manager is very similar to the last version, while in fact it has been major changes to it to keep it compatible with a new version.

6 What are your favorite Mac apps out there from other developers? Why?

SubEthaEdit is definitely among our favorite applications, any category. It does not attempt to do everything, and instead focuses on doing a few things right. We believe that is what makes a great Mac application. Other great applications that follow the same formula are Cyberduck, Adium and Papaya. But of course there are many more great applications for Mac OS X, too many to mention.

7 What features would you like to add to Keyword Manager that at this time seem improbable/impossible?

We would love to integrate support for Faces and Places in a future version of Keyword Manager. It remains to be seen if this is possible.

    Why use Mail Stationery?

By using Stationery Pack to indicate the purpose of your email, you can save time. For example, rather than typing, “I would like to invite you to the movie,” use the cinema theme and insert the title and time only.

What do users say about TranslateIt!?

I use TranslateIt! for Mac every day and find it excellent. I don’t think there is anything comparable on the market.
The program is unobtrusive and integrates into Mac OS very well. The dictionaries are extensive, the user interface is well designed, and the software is very stable – hasn’t crashed yet. I’m very happy with TranslateIt!.
