Who likes to have fun with photos?DoubleTake is for stitching photos, screen shots and scans to larger images. DoubleTake works well with iPhoto and Aperture from where you can drag and drop the photos you want to stitch. With automatic and manual control and color tools for changing exposure settings you can stitch and combine images which were not even intended for stitching. Poster PrintingSome photos, not just panoramas, just deserve to be printed large. DoubleTake splits the photo and prints it on pages ready to be cut and pasted into a poster. Poster printing will let you set the size of the finished poster directly or let you fill a number of pages to the edges to give you the largest poster for the least cutting and pasting.
Learn more about printing with DoubleTake. Stitching automatically can reorder photos in any order but it will recognize the time stamps and file names and try the obvious combinations first. iPhoto users who shoot panoramas left to right will find it quite easy to see which photos are intended for stitching when browsed in iPhoto. Stitching manually allows for creative stitching and for stitching of photos where it is not obvious which way they fit. Sample images where manual arrangement are also available on DoubleTake’s web site. The manual for DoubleTake is rich with screen shots and written as short as possible while still including all features. Screen Shots
DoubleTake takes special care of screenshots. It can search pixel by pixel for the perfect alignment. This works well unless you have screenshots with white borders around them which matches in an infinite number of ways. Doubletake can receive images via copy and paste, but if you want to take more than one screen shot drag and drop from the Desktop may be the simplest way to do it. View sample images |

Honestly, this seems to be a great program – very, very simple, fast, good results.
Where’s the catch?
Does anyone know better tools?

Photoshop. But price-wise no competition.

For what it does DoubleTake is much better (fast and sleek) that PhotoShop. Trust me, I bought it more than an year ago and I’m very, very pleased with it. No crashes, no complications.
The only problem I ever had (that in PhotoShop was even worse) is when I’m taking a panorama with several photos and they have very different exposures — in those cases the stitching is a b****. I learn from it and now I try to take my panoramas with more care.
My experience says: 5/5. This is a great promo.

Looks like a neat app…I’ve been using Canon’s Photostitch software that came with my camera, but it’s PowerPC code…it’s not as sweet as this thing.

Had a look at Calico, which is supposed to deliver better results than DoubleTake.
Unfortunately, I had only 2 sets of pano-pictures to try it, both very poor, results are similar, but DoubleTake’s UI is A LOT better.
I think I’ll go for it…

I downloaded this ages ago but haven’t had time to try it out, so this Zot was a good motivator. I’m used to using the free and open source Hugin for stitching panoramas, and the first thing that hit me is how much better the DoubleTake’s UI is, especially the way it automatically ordered the images on drag-n-drop.
After tweaking a few things I exported and had a look in graphic converter, but on zooming the alignment turned out to be all over the place (maybe I did something wrong?).
In short the UI is great but I think the underlying alignment and merging code needs some work.

Adrian,
while working in DoubleTake and zooming in, I was disappointed with the alignement as well, but this seems to be a simple preview, once I saved the panorama, the resulting image was quite good and had none of the bad stitches I first saw in the preview.

I purchased this app some time ago and have been quite impressed. Simple and functional, it’s something that Apple could have created. It can do a lot, but it can’t do everything. Depending on the distance of the subject to the camera, one must be careful about rotating too far. This would no doubt apply with all stiching apps. If you can use an app like this, go for it!

Lisa,
last time I checked I was a Zotgeist member – how do I get the discount? Paypal wants to have the whole 14.95 from me…

Anyone have experience with how this compares to Huggin (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/)?
June 1st, 2007 at 10:33 am
I bought DoubleTake a few years ago. It’s been great for my personal needs, and it’s what I recommend to friends.
Hessi asked about better tools. Photoshop definitely has its Photomerge feature (caveat: I’ve only used it in CS2…I don’t know what, if anything, they’ve done with it in CS3), but you don’t buy Photoshop just for that. :)
At work, we use Stitcher Unlimited from RealViz. It’s probably the best photo-stitching software in the Mac space, but it’s also 20 times more expensive than DoubleTake. Even the Express version is quite a bit more expensive.
Sorry, MK, I don’t have any experience of Hugin.
If you just want to piece photos together from time to time, you’d be well-served by this software. Just bear in mind that some photos/scenes come together better than others due to lens distortion, the layout of what your shooting (inside or outside), and changing light conditions (the bane of all outdoor photographers).
Here’re some useful tips:

I’ve been using DoubleTake for a long time and think it’s great. I’ve tried a couple of the other free/open source photo stitchers and couldn’t stand their interfaces — and ended up with really bad results because I couldn’t figure them out. This app really does make stitching simple and the developer is decent too!
Take a look at m panoramas (with a screenshot of one in progress):

Yes, how do we Zotgeists get our special $2 discount? (It’s not showing up when I try to buy this app.)
June 1st, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Whoa… great! I’ve been waiting for this. The first Zot for me in seven months!! Thanks. I even think this was one of my suggestions at SuggestAZot and I hope we’re now getting more of that list… :)

I demo’ed this awhile ago and really really liked the UI, the stitching wasn’t very impressive for me though. I like to take LOTS of pictures in the pano and its important to me to have iPhoto drag and drop capabilities… After lots of testing, I ended up purchasing AutoPano Pro for $119… Its still not perfect, but it does an amazing job.
So if your looking for a quick easy solution for 2-3 images per stitch, DoubleTake is pretty neat. If you want something more high-end, check out AutoPano Pro.
Cheers!
