Let Geotagalog and a GPS logger do the hard work of assigning Places metadata to your photos. Why import ungeotagged pictures into iPhoto, when it’s so straightforward to GPS-enable your favorite camera?

Features

  • Geotags photos while importing them into iPhoto from a connected camera or card reader. It’s also easy to geotag and import files/folders already on your hard drive.
  • Shows live photo location preview, with mouseover thumbnails, as you make adjustments.
  • Sets geolocation metadata to JPEG and several popular RAW formats without image quality loss.
  • Direct support for many tracklog types:
    • popular NMEA 0183 logs (.nmea, .gps, .log, .txt)
    • GPX, the standard GPS Exchange format (.gpx)
    • Garmin Training Center course histories (.tcx)
    • FAI Gliding Commission flight recordings (.igc)
    • We gladly consider requests for new formats! (support@calftrail.com)

Requirements

  • GPS logger (or a handheld GPS that can record breadcrumb history; it can even be an iPhone or Android tracklog app!)
  • To see how geotagging with a logger works, try it with our sample data.
  • Universal binary, works on Mac OS X 10.5–10.6

Developer interview

Geotagalog is designed and built by Calf Trail Software, LLC, a small independent software shop in rural Washington State. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Geotagalog for MacZOT customers with @natevw, the primary developer of Geotagalog:

What’s the most unique, useful feature of your product?
We put a lot of effort into the design so that Geotagalog would be straightforward to use. Even if you don’t remember whether the breadcrumb history tracklog recorder you have is called a “GPS” or a “GSP”, we want you to be able to automatically geotag your photos with as little fuss as possible.
Why did you create this app? What need were you trying to satisfy?
I love to drive around the country on a beautiful afternoon just photographing all the interesting things or inspiring scenery I find. As a result, I have many thousands of digital pictures with hundreds of tracklogs. but I’d never matched them up because of all the extra work it would have taken. I began writing an entire photo manager built around a special map with completely visual drag-and-drop geotagging. When Apple announced Places in iPhoto, I decided to focus on just the automatic geotagging and work to make that the best it can be.
What features would you like to add to your product that seem impossible?
Right now Geotagalog only supports geotagging photos as you import them into iPhoto. It would be very useful to me and many others if it could geotag photos that are already in iPhoto. To really get that right has turned out to be difficult to do, especially since we are committed to doing it without shortcuts that could corrupt your photo library. So it’s taking a lot longer to finish than I’d planned, but I’m determined to get it working well because of the benefits it will bring to users’ workflows.

Doesn’t this require having iPhoto ’09 as well. I’m running 10.5.8, iPhoto ’08 and I tried the demo photos. I see no co-ordinates whatsoever. Page says works with iPhoto when in fact it only works with a specific version. It may work with other versions but the key feature(s) is/are missing.

@ray – I will see if I can update the MacZOT page to make this clear. There is a hack that can enable a hidden location map link in iPhoto ’08, but we definitely recommend using Geotagalog with the Places feature of iPhoto ’09.
