Do you type a lot? a little?

No matter how much you type, TypeIt4Me will save you wear and tear on those wrists & fingers!

  • Never type your full name or email signature again;
  • Never hunt around for that standard contract clause;
  • Type a short abbreviation and have it expand to a word, a phrase, even several pages worth of text (with pictures, too);
  • Trigger AppleScripts with your abbreviations instead of reaching for a menu or pressing obscure keyboard combinations.
  • Have TypeIt4Me automatically correct your spelling using Apple’s built-in dictionaries in any of several languages.
  • Define abbreviations that prompt you from variable input when expanding (AutoCue).
  • TypeIt4Me is a background application that “watches” you type and replaces abbreviations you set up with clippings you assign to them. It requires OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or higher and works best with 10.5 (Leopard).

      Though the functionality of this app seems interesting to me at first site, I wonder if this app is still actively developed. Version 4 seems to have been launched around January 2008 or so, making this version 4 almost 2 years old. It would be reassuring to me if the dev would explain his plans with this app.

      If you had bothered to look around a little you’d have found that the MacZot download is 4.2, which was released in September, 2009.

      Or a quick visit to the developer’s site would have told you want you wanted to know. [ http://www.ettoresoftware.com/products/typeit4me/ ]

      I’ve used this app since v2.0 and really like it. I’ve also met the developer and Macworld San Francisco. A great guy who stands behind is product.

      This is a really good deal.

    3. Joan Says:

      Well Junkie, obviously I did all that and then some. In January 2008 (or around) version 4.0 was born and almost 2 years later it’s at 4.2, hence my question. What part of that don’t you comprehend?

    4. ubrgeek Says:

      Kids, kids. Behave. Don’t make me turn this Zot around! :)

    5. SoftwareJunkie Says:

      4.0 is two years old. 4.2 is now two months old.

      Hence, my post.

      A better question would be “What do you expect from this app?” Your “…and then some.” part would be you having e-mailed the author, obviously.

      Yippee! Yahoo! I’m doing de dance of joy! I’ve been demoing TypeIt4Me and TextExpander for the past week and had just decided to buy TypeIt4Me when I saw today’s Zot. They are both very similar, wonderfully useful applications, as is Typinator, which I have been using for more than a year. But, Typinator doesn’t work in an application that I use all the time, and no one can figure out why, so I need to switch to something that works in everything. I haven’t had any problems with TextExpander or TypeIt4Me.

      One of the main reasons I’m going with TypeIt4Me, though, is the ability to insert tabs in clippings. I can open a blank email, type in my abbreviation and it will put in the email addresses, jump to the subject line and fill that in, then jump to the body and fill that in, all while I sit there watching with giggly pleasure. Yes, I could do that kind of thing with Automator and Mail, but I use Gmail.

      Also, TypeIt4Me has autocues that will pause for you to type in the appropriate text, then fill in more, pause again—however many time you need it to. I have some standard text that I write for when my kids are absent from school. I type my abbreviation and TypeIt4Me fills in the date, the greeting, and up to the part where I say which kid was sick. I type in the name, hit tab, and TypeIt4Me types more, down to where I have to put in the pronoun for that kid. Then, it finishes it off. It’s almost a game to see just how much of my work I can get TypeIt4Me to do for me.

      As for developer response, I did email the developer when I first started demoing TypeIt4Me to ask a question. He emailed back within a day. I emailed him again after several days of use with a feature request, and he hasn’t responded. That was 10 days ago. He’s either ignoring me because I was asking for something new/different, or he’s working on it. I’ll choose to be an optimist on that one. As for updates, I suppose there could have been a lot of minor updates during this time, like 4.1.5, 4.1.6, etc, to finally arrive at 4.2. I don’t know, but it was updated most recently on 10/25/09.

      There is a feature comparison located here: http://ettoresoftware.com/products/typeit4me/features/ And FYI, you can get TextExpander for 20% off till Nov 6 at http://www.onefingerdiscount.com/ As for me, I’m making my TypeIt4Me purchase right now!

      Oops, my bad, I meant to say November 13 on that One Finger Discount.

    8. t5tr Says:

      Thanks above Robin S comments and its mention to the TypeIt4Me features page and I’ve at least tried TypeIt4Me. I already have Typinator and TextExpander, and I was not going for TypeIt4Me.

      Instead of importing my current abbreviations from a file (which BTW didn’t work as suggested using an exported file from current Typinator), I’ve just kept TypeIt4Me disabled while adding each abbreviation using Typinator “one last time”.

      Still have to figure the new features, but the date functions present in TypeIt4Me simply works like a charm, with full strftime functionality, without messing up my PathFinder tabbed terminals or when used inside “save as” file dialogs, and respecting my option to always force 2 digits according, problems that used to keep me alternating both TextExpander and Typinator versions. Zotted!

    9. MacDavo Says:

      A shortfall all these apps share, is an inability to function with Synergy, the application that allows you to use a single keyboard and mouse with more than one computer. A MBP and iMac for example.
      This basically renders them unusable. If installed on the “master” they delete or damage any abbreviated text on the slave. If installed on the slave, text replacement doesn’t occur.
      I’d love to find something that gets around this problem.

    10. Mark Says:

      The dev’s site talks about a version 5 coming to support 64-bit. How will the Zot licenses upgrade?

    11. Riccardo Ettore Says:

      Just caught up with the above comments, sorry for the delay in replying.
      Upgrades are free to registered users in the first 18 months after purchase, so v5.0 will be free to all those who purchased via Zot this time round. (After 18 months, upgrades are 1/3 of the full price, i.e. $9.)

      @Joan, there have been a number of small updates between 4.0 and 4.2 and please note that TypeIt4Me was first released in 1989 (yes, eighty-nine, 20 years ago!) so I think I hold the absolute record for longevity. Version 5.0 coming in early 2010 will be 64 bit savvy and probably add a new feature or two.

      Would Robin S please re-send me the email I haven’t answered so I can respond.

      Many thanks & regards to all,

      Riccardo Ettore
