“I live in a cross platform world. We need to be able to offer every access to MySQL database for Mac as well as PC users. Navicat is the only program I have seen that works this well on the Mac.

Able to export and import easily. Very easy to use. Lightening fast. Scheduling, back-ups, Queries are all very easy to use. This does a lot more than what I expected.”

Would have loved to have won today’s Zot. :) It’s a great program.

Tempting offer. The database sync isnt anywhere near as reliable/robust as SQLYog but it sure would be nice to have a native SQL client. Wonder if this includes all updates (eg for next year, like SQLyog do it) or excludes the next major version of Navicat which is right around the corner?

  3. Anthony Hocken Says:

    To answer my own question…

“Our upgrade policy allows customers to receive Free minor version updates within a single major version release. For example, a customer who has purchased version 8.0.7 will be entitled to any 8.x.x release. For major version upgrade, i.e. from version 7 to version 8, customers are eligible for free upgrade within 3 months of a new major version release”

The 3 month window makes this offer mighty tempting….

The last time Navicat was on MacZOT I debated about whether or not to get it, but the positive reviews convinced me to give it a try. I’m glad I did, it’s so much more convenient to use than what I had been using (CocoaMySQL and phpMyAdmin).

Imports and exports are reasonably quick, and it’s easy to create and modify tables. Creating a new query is a two step process for some reason, but works very well.

Navicat uses a tabbed interface rather than having multiple windows open. In some cases it has tabs-within-tabs which I don’t mind but some people don’t like; for instance a query tab has sub tabs to switch between the SQL query and the results.

If you can ssh to your server Navicat can connect to it, and it’s so much faster and easier to use than phpMyAdmin.

If you’re deciding whether or not to buy it, I encourage you to download the free trial and play with it for an hour, in that time you can get a pretty good idea of whether or not it’s for you.

  5. Anthony Hocken Says:

@davermont Not sure if that was aimed at my last reply or whether it was a general comment. But just to add, I downloaded the trial. That’s why I mentioned the sync isnt as robust as SQlYog. For example if you have a table without an index it’ll refuse to sync, where as SQLYog worked around that limitation a few years ago. Most tables obviously need an index, but occasionally it’s not needed. I had one table in my own database which didn’t have or need one. I thought fair enough, I’ll just add the index and be done with it even though it’s not needed. But then I tried a couple of third party databases (blogs) and among the many tables were one or two without an index. Obviously I’m not going to manually add indexes to those and prefer to leave them untouched.

Good suggestion re SSH. That’s how I log in using SQLYog, and is how I tested the sync features of Navicat when I downloaded the trial a few weeks ago. Add to the index limitations, it was much slower, the UI froze often and generally less responsive. Several times I was left with impression it wasnt working. It felt very unfinished where as SQLYog is a reliable workhorse which has never failed me.

Obviously if someone isnt prepared to run SQlyog in a VM window then Navicat is the next best thing and likely better than any other solution for Mac right now. That is until SQLYog is out for Mac – but the creators have been very cagey about their progress on a Mac version.

With Navicat version 8 also granted, it’s time to put Navicat in the dock, and start enjoying comprehensive management of MySQL. Zotted!

  8. t5tr Says:

Just a note for those MacZot users trying to figure out how to upgrade Navicat for MySQL from v.7.1.7 to its current version 8.0.2.
I’d to submit a ticket to Navicat sales department asking for what was my _order number_, since using the transaction ID or the invoice number that I got from MacZot didn’t work out.
Once you use your “order number” and follow the directions from the Navicat Sales department, you’ll get a _free_ serial number to register your pretty new Navicat for MySQL version 8.
BTW, the upgrade worked as expected, no problems using my previously configured connections. :)
