Who to believe…
Gary Rosenzweig tackles the controversial question of whether you need to buy anti-virus software for your Mac. There are currently no active Mac viruses and anti-virus software could cause unexpected problems. Staying informed and up-to-date is a better option.

Thank you for your feedback.
There are many misconceptions about security for the Mac, and anti-virus is one of the better discussed topics. MacScan, however, is not anti-virus for the Mac and never has claimed to be anti-virus.
MacScan detects, isolates and removes malware for the Mac such as spyware, trojan horses, dialer applications, and keystroke loggers. All of the programs MacScan protects against are Mac-specific threats, it does not protect against Windows spyware.
MacScan focuses on security and privacy, and helps manage internet clutter by allowing quick removal of internet history in one click. The Blacklisted Tracking Cookie cleaner allows users to remove just tracking cookies from ad networks — leaving good cookies in place so you don’t lose saved usernames and passwords to your favorite sites.
We hope this helps answer some misconceptions about security for the Mac and what MacScan focuses on.

Does this software detect all commercially available scanners and keyboard loggers – even those designed as rootkits? Could you list what can be detected?
February 24th, 2010 at 11:45 am
Yes, MacScan detects commercial keystroke loggers. A list of spyware detected by MacScan is publicly available on the website following:

If you find something we don’t detect or you feel should be detected simply e-mail us at macsec@securemac.com and we would be glad to followup.
