Contactizer Pro 3.6.1 is, in many ways, an impressive information manager. The notion of the contact as hub to the information attached to it is an attractive organizational idea – one that you might take to.

The growing appeal of Macs in small businesses has been matched by an explosion of networkable task and contact managers. Despite some rough edges, this new version of Objective Decision’s Contactizer Pro more than holds its own ina competitive market.

I bought this product several months ago and wasn’t happy enough. There’s room for improvement. First, save your iCal and Addressbook! Second, be carefully – you have to decide to import OR to sync your iCal entries. Within the daily business I noticed that the entries aren’t similar between Contactizer Pro and iCal.

I also tried Daylight. But this tool makes more strive, especially due the external database.

Since some months I’m happy with Bento. Bento allows you to work with iCal and Addressbook “automatically”. Supports you to create your own queries and tables for all other stuff. For me a “one and only application”.

Best, all of them offering a trial version.

Before you decide against Contactizer Pro, be sure to check out Filemaker’s upgrade policy for Bento (full price). Read reviews for both as well.

I have struggled with all of these- used Daylite, ContactizerPro (CP), Bento. Was using Now up to date for years, but their upgraded product, Nighthawk, has been only a “promise” for almost 2 years now.

I have settled on CP, but certainly not a completely satisfied user. Daylite IS more powerful, but both harder to user, and with a less intuitive “mac” interface. CP had sync problems, which at least for me, have worked themselves out. The main thing I’m not happy about is poor support. If you send a question to developer, or post on forums, don’t expect a reply. The developer also asked for volunteers to help with beta testing next version. That was more than 2 months ago, and despite multiple requests on his own forums for better communication about what’s going on, there’s pretty much nothing. There is help from the “help menu,” but there is no manual (another request from users for a very long time).

It’s sad that the mac doesn’t have a truly great product for this important business need, but that’s the way it is. For those who need contact/calendar management more than the basics, this app IS worth looking at, but you’re pretty much on your own.

For me the Contactizer is just kind of too busy (the UI) and complicated. There are too many features and too many things to look for from the interface.

There are also better choices such as Bento (it’s not quite the direct competitor, but will do similar jobs), and Pagico (the People version), which provides only a few but pretty flexible features.

    5. Eddie Says:

I’ve used many of these applications and have settled on Contactizer Pro for now. It’s not perfect, but for my needs it has been a good choice. It’s a shame that still there is no adequate manual or screencasts.
I was expecting to like Chandler, but so far it’s not a viable choice for me.
Daylite is very good, but support has deteriorated, upgrades are expensive, requested features are not added, etc.
Under OS X I used NUTD&C, but I did not stay with them for OS X. I also used Chronos Consultant which has evolved (or transformed) into SOHO Organizer. I do have it but don’t really use it. Loved it under OS 9.

Regarding integration with Apple applications, often Apple is the one who needs to resolve the issues. I rarely open Address Book and never open iCal. That’s why I choose to buy alternative applications that will better suit my needs.

As far as Bento, I would not support a developer with a lack of upgrade path. I got tired of paying to be a beta tester whenever Apple originally released iWork and similar applications. Now I wait until the 3rd release and then decide if I want to make my purchase.
Bento does remind me of a recent application I got, ProVue Panorama. With its outdated interface, it has been a great purchase. It already has templates for contacts, but I think I’ll also wor on creating my own as a way to learn more about Panorama’s use.

I also use Entourage, and no matter how much Mac users criticize Microsoft, it has been consistently good for years, with great support, and fair prices especially when they have offered rebates and deals.

I have to say the program overall has helped me manage my small business better than I had been able to achieve with my previous workflow, but agree Sync can be improved. I’d like to see the ability to track email outside of Mail, meaning, I like my inbox lean, but CP 3.6 requires the Mail to be kept in Mail.app I still archive in MailSteward offsite as well. Support could be better as well.
