About IGG Software, LLC

In 2003, programmer Ian Gillespie launched IGG Software, LLC, in Southern California. He had one simple goal: to develop intuitive, yet powerful, personal and small business applications for Mac OS X.

Gillespie created his inaugural application, AtWork, while working on a doctorate in botany. The program took root as a tool by which Gillespie could track the hours he spent conducting rare and endangered plant surveys. But after posting the application online and selling his first copy on the first day (for $6.00), a business was born. AtWork evolved into iWork, which in turn was relaunched as iBiz in early 2005. Today, iBiz 3 is the simplest and best tool for Mac-based free-lancers, consultants and contract workers to track and invoice billable hours.

As iBiz developed, IGG also began to offer ever more powerful versions of iBank, the company’s flagship application for managing personal finances and small business accounts. iBank 2 emerged in January 2006 after being completely rewritten to take advantage of Mac OS 10.4, Tiger. Similarly, Gillespie introduced iBank 3 at Macworld 2008. This latest version, developed strictly for OS 10.5, was named a runner-up for Best Leopard Application in the 2007 Apple Design Awards. With major new features such as direct account downloads, iPhone sync, interactive graphs and loan management, iBank has become the leading money management application created exclusively for Mac users.

Since 2004, IGG Software has been based in Putney, Vermont, a vibrant small community in a state known for its environmentalism. As such, IGG is committed to supporting sustainable energy, obtaining all of its electricity from renewable sources through Green Mountain Power’s “Greener Mountain Power” program.

I’ve tried them all, and this is, by far my favorite billing/time tracking app out there. It has a few quirks, but great support and a great number of features. I bought this at full price and would do so again, so getting it for only $30 is a great deal. The attention to detail and the level of support that this app comes with beats all the competition. Billings might look a bit flashier, but iBiz is more stable and has a LOT better support. On The Job is also good [and i own a license to it as well as Billings!], but, for my use, OTJ doesn’t have the featureset that I need; iBiz does.

Spend some time using this app; read the docs and don’t worry about the learning curve; the app is well worth it, and it’s one of my most used apps. I use it for flat rate stuff all the time as well [selling photos] as well as for particular jobs [both programming, design, and photography; it can be adapted for any line of work really]. The task timer is quite handy – nice to know how long I spent for someone in Aperture/Photoshop/etc when doing ‘by the hour’ type of work.

Anyway, give this a workout – it is well worth the time, IMO.

    Thanks for the comments Vince.
I may not have much time to try both programs. Do you have any further comments regarding Billings 3 and iBiz 3?
I have Billings 2, and the upgrade to 3 is currently $25 instead of $35.
iBiz is just $5 more thanks to this promo, but I’ve read many negative comments regarding reliability, speed, data loss, bugs, CPU usage, and so on.
I know that Apple’s sync feature is buggy, and has been buggy for a long time. Does iBiz rely on syncing with iCal and/or Address Book?
I want to move away from MarketCircle and Billings, but I’m not sure that this is the right moment. Perhaps by 3.5 or something.
    Any comments are appreciated :)

  3. Eddie Says:

I forgot to ask. Will version 4 be a paid upgrade, or free for purchasers of this Zot?

  4. Jamox Says:

    Major important questions:

1.) Does iBiz support international and multiple currencies?!

2.) Does it provide functionality to invoice flat rates and selling separate products—not just hourly billed services?

  5. Robin S Says:

HAUNTED HOUSE QUEST: Love it! Great sound effects. I had to buy it for this price. It’s definitely a time waster. I had to force myself to quit. I don’t think it keeps high scores, though. Darn. I want to make sure my daughter knows when I beat her.

  6. Jon Williams Says:

    Hi there,

I just wanted to address some of the questions asked about iBiz:

    • iBiz does not rely on syncing with iCal. It is a feature that you can use if you choose, but iBiz will work perfectly well without it.
    •  Version 4 will be a paid upgrade, but it is currently in the alpha stages of development and won’t be available for quite some time yet. It is likely that registered users of v3 will be offered a discounted upgrade price.
    •  iBiz does not support multiple currencies – it will use whatever currency you have specified in System Preferences.
    •  You can bill flat rate and quantity-based items in addition to hourly services, but product inventory tracking is not included.
