What do people say about TuneAid ?

  • When my hard drive crashed during an iTunes Library backup with Apple’s Backup utility, I was stuck with an “in progress” bundle that wouldn’t restore. I didn’t spend a great deal of time comparing offerings in the iTunes/iPod rescue application space; after reading reviews here on MacUpdate I picked TuneAid from DigiDNA. The price was reasonable and the application delivered on its promised results: it restored everything on my iPod back to my iTunes Library. I noticed on MacUpdate that a new version was ready and I upgraded. A new activation key was needed but before I could check about the inconvenience, a new activation key appeared in my Mail inbox. Good job and thanks, DigiDNA..
  • Works perfectly with at least iPhone, iPod Classic and iPod Nano (these are the ones I’ve tried it with). TuneAid saved my music library when my media drive crashed and it managed to import back my stuff from my iPod Classic. Great Stuff! The interface is very nice and it works perfectly with iTunes importing not only the songs but the playlists as well.

Does anyone know if TuneAid will import music from a Mac-formatted iPod to iTunes on a PC?

    2. Robin S Says:

@GaryD, their website has screenshots for both Windows and Mac, so I would think it would work for a Mac iPod to the PC. Even if you couldn’t bring the tunes directly into iTunes, you could put them in a folder and then import them into iTunes. You might not get your playlists that way, though. The website also says 3-day refund policy, so you might just want to give it a try.

Senuti will do this free (it’s donationware) and very well. Anyone know of any reason to go with this instead?

    4. GaryD Says:

@ Robin S. Thanks. I believe that it will work if I first reformat the iPod for Windows, since Windows doesn’t read Mac OS Extended formatting but Mac’s do recognize PC drive formatting.

@mcoad The Senuti app cannot run from a Windows PC. TuneAid runs from both Macs and PCs. Here’s one scenario:

My son is in the Army and recently purchased a PC (Oh, well, what do Dads know about computers…) Here at home he has his large iTunes Library in his user account on the family Mac. I’m sending him a new iPod which I pre-loaded with his iTunes Music from here at home. Since TuneAid works on both platforms, I thought that if I purchased TuneAid for him, it might be useful for easily loading his PC there, and for using it reversely to keep his PPC Mac iTunes Music updated here when he comes home from time to time. I’m aware that there are several other ways to get this done, but considered that perhaps this might be a simple solution for him.

Seems like Senuti’s a better deal than this, at least for Mac users.
