Who else loves stylish trash cans?
Bin-it 1.2.4 is a desktop trash can that gives you quick and easy access to your Trash.
- Desktop Trash: Keep a floating trash can on your desktop. Don’t have it hidden in the Dock!
- Trash Level Display: Your Trash icon changes depending on the amount of files in the trash … your trash isn’t simply empty or full, so why is your trash icon?
- Adjustable: Choose from multiple Trash icon styles, change its size, opacity and size thresholds. Take control of your Trash!
Bin-it received a 4-star rating from MacUpdate and Softpedia.

I have Compost… does everything I need. As I’m using Pathfinder I already got the bin on my Desktop. Plus, the latest version of Compost comes with a new app called DeskTrash that puts a bin on the desktop too. So, to me it looks like this app is on the way out. Still, for $2.50 you get some nice design.

Cool idea, but not quite what I expected. I thought that it would give the option to replace the Trash icon in the Dock. I guess for Mac OS Classic purists, this is a good app since you can let it appear on the desktop.

It is also a good App wth a 2 Screen Setup. so you can have a Bin on every Desktop.

Why don’t they just combine the two applications into one and give you the option to use a desktop trash can or not and which one you want to use in addition to the features that compost has for managing multiple discs and free space.

When I first looked at this I rolled my eyes & thought: What is this, a dress-up party for the Trash can? After dismissing it, I thought about it again later and realized that it might be useful in MY situation.
When it comes to DISTANCE, it’s a long way to the corner of that dock when I have to D&D Finder refuse to that TINY little Trash can. This point alone made me wonder if Bin-it could help.
After hitting up versiontracker.com I stumbled over to the developer’s site, http://mactrash.com, and read more about Bin-it and Compost (a related product). And I did find a good review on Compost at Macworld (4-mice/5):

Speaking as a designer, I found the layout of the Bin-it app Screenshots attractive:

My initial evaluation: I like it. It’s easier to point, shoot & score with that BIGGER Trash bin and I like the feature set.
My only CON: *No* Undo command (Finder let’s us put things back we accidentally trash) [ahem]
To the DEVELOPER
- I heard that you are phasing this product out – Is this true?
- How about giving us the options (ala enhancements) to pimp out our Bin-it Trash cans with colors (or graffiti) and to personalize bins with our own images. I’d love to put my not-so-fave politician’s face on that can! ;)

This may be the only app in the world where saying “It looks like garbage” is NOT an insult… :D Cool-looking garbage…

Okay, I purchased it (for 2-1/2 bucks, what the heck), but I already don’t like it. There is no option/preference to avoid the emptying trash warning, so I’m stuck with an extra click/keystroke each time I use it. Should have tried it first.

Thanks for the pointers EnlightenedOne.
I take Bin-it ONE step further by combining it with LiteSwitch X (A *better* Command-Tab for Mac OS X). Bin-it’s icon shows up center screen whenever I Command-Tab. AND with LiteSwitch I can D&D (drag & drop) files onto its icons. Now THATS an EASY TO ACCESS Trash bin!

Cheers! :)
