We decided that the MacZOT experience while good, could be a lot richer. We discussed what that might look like in practice and mashed that up with what we thought the team would be interested in doing more of and what we could do less of.

We came up with some great ideas. One of those ideas provides a place for us to share more and describe in detail why an app is good rather than just putting a lower price on it to get you motivated.

While we’re doing that, we wanted to share with you an app we have found to be not only super popular, but an application project worth supporting.

Today’s ZOT is VLC media player 0.8.5

From their site we can describe it like this:

  • It is a free cross-platform media player
  • It supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need for additional codecs
  • It can also be used as a streaming server, with extended features (video on demand, on the fly transcoding, …)

In practice, it’s great for playing back your backup DVDs ripped with MacTheRipper

Enjoy this new app, support the development team if you find it useful, and stay tuned for the next episode!

I’ve been using VLC for quite a while. If you don’t have it on your machine, get it… It can play back almost anything Quicktime Player can’t handle, including VCDs in full screen mode.

  2. Greenie Says:

Already wrote about that on the Zot-comments, but just in case, I’ll repeat it here:

About the free zots like VLC:

Wouldn’t be the next logical step a “donate”-button where you can support the developers? I mean macZot even talks about supporting them in the product presentation, so this could lead some readers to give a dollar or two…

  3. geoff Says:

VLC is great. You might also want to mention NicePlayer (http://niceplayer.indyjt.com/). I actually like NicePlayer even better for movies that work with it.

  4. Ericq Says:

Definitely a program worth supporting. I use it everyday, and I love it!

  5. Rick Baskett Says:

I think that’s an excellent idea about the donation button for free apps.. excellent idea.

  6. erichd Says:

    I agree…..

While most of the apps might be referred to as “freeware,” in actuality more and more are calling themselves “donationware.”

    Remember Textpander (now TextExpander)?

I imagine the logistics might not be great, but since we did a DevZot for Juan Alvarez, I see no reason why we wouldn’t do a similar thing for specific apps.

MZ would keep something like 1% or whatever of the gross, the rest would go to the dev, and we all get assurances of the free upgrades should the app be bought and repackaged as commercial.

  7. adinb Says:

    I’ll second that!

  8. Groxx Says:

While I already use this, I, personally, really like these free-app Zots. This is an app-a-day site, not buy-an-app-a-day (we’re just used to having to pay for good things).

    Keep em up MacZOT!

  9. icheerful Says:

yep. a donate button for those who would love to support the dev. it is definitely a + for the dev. and easy for us to do so when we wish to.

    good job! keep it up!

  10. CottonIJoe Says:

    I totally agree with Greenie!

  11. matgorb Says:

I like VLC, but I also really like this AppleScript:

    tell application “QuickTime Player”
    present front movie scale screen
    end tell

  12. Mickeh Says:

Free? Your asking for too much there…

  13. Kajtus Says:

I can see some reason to post excellent freeware at maczot that is little known. But, as zot mentioned, VLC is is extremely popular. It never drops from the most downloaded list in macupdate. So, what’s the benefit of posting it here?
A donate button will change the picture; I do believe excellent freeware developers should be rewarded, and that may be the honorable way for zot to post something when these no-shows appear.

  14. harringg Says:

That would be logical to have a donate button, since MacZot isn’t a freeware site. That’s what http://freemacware.com/ is for. I visit both sites on a daily basis and don’t need another freeware site in MacZot.

  15. Karsen Says:

I’ll wait until tomorrow when they offer this with ‘Jets and Guns’ for even less money.

  16. mattt Says:

“I’ll wait until tomorrow when they offer this with ‘Jets and Guns’ for even less money.”

    Hahahahaha!

  17. mbazzoni Says:

Good idea. Maybe you could make it a FreeZOT that occurs weekly or monthly. I also like the idea of a DonationZOT to help small developers continue to make great apps.

  18. Josh F Says:

Excited about the changes – this cheap stuff is for the birds!

I’d be happy to pay value for an exciting, unique app that meets a need. Go ZOT Go!

  19. Avi Flax Says:

Q: Has anyone had any success running the current release of MacTheRipper on an Intel Mac? I haven’t… and I haven’t figured out how to get ahold of a copy of 3.0 Beta. Seems a bit too complicated.

  20. Orig_Club_Soda Says:

Isnt donating like giving to charity? We dont what to upset anybody buy helping someone else out!?

    JK

Love this app. Essential if you watch torrents. Can also be used as a client for streaming video. The playlist feature is nice, too, if youwant to watch a series or season of TV. Its not perfect, but close to it.

  21. Stack Says:

I like the direction you’re moving in, and I’d like to fifth the donate button idea.

Also, I prefer Handbrake for DVD ripping. Check it out.

  22. Jim Says:

Not saying a link or button for donating isn’t a bad idea but with all of those suggesting it, I wonder how many took the time to go to their site and do it from there.

  23. Sniff Says:

I hope today isn’t anyone birthday.

  24. gryphonent Says:

Just a shame that 0.8.5 will be the last version for non-Intel Macs.

  25. Dave Says:

Great app, but for the free apps featured on MacZOT, I’d like to see either unknown apps or apps recently released. It would be a good way to discover a program or give one some deserved publicity.

  26. Raskolnikov Says:

gryphonent, do you realise that Intel-only VLC thing was an April Fools’ Day joke on the part of the developers?

  27. stainboy Says:

    thanks for the link, Jim!
